About

Dr Desmond Ong Hang Shyan is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in orthopaedic sports surgery, with a focus on the shoulder, elbow, and wrist, and also treating a wide range of other orthopaedic conditions.

Dr Ong is recognised for his work in advanced arthroscopic upper limb surgery. He was the earliest surgeon in Southeast Asia to perform arthroscopic tendon transfers for massive irreparable rotator cuff tears and introduced wide-awake arthroscopic shoulder labral repair at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). His expertise spans sports injuries, degenerative conditions, and complex trauma of the upper limb, with a strong emphasis on minimally invasive surgical techniques that promote faster recovery and improved long-term function.

After graduating from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2000, Dr Ong completed his Master of Medicine in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2006. He is a registered orthopaedic surgeon and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Recognised for his clinical excellence, he received the Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) scholarship from the Ministry of Health and the Excellent Service Gold Award. In 2011, he was appointed Visiting Scholar by the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Medicine and trained at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong, furthering his expertise in wrist and elbow arthroscopy.

Dr Ong is also deeply committed to medical education. He serves as a clinical tutor at NUS, mentoring medical students and orthopaedic trainees, and is an active member of the Singapore Orthopaedic Association and the Singapore Society for Hand Surgery. He presents at regional and international conferences, sharing his knowledge in advanced arthroscopic and sports-related upper-limb surgery.

Known affectionately by his patients as the “Bowtie Doctor” for his signature bowtie, Dr Ong is also an avid cyclist and father of two. His personal experience balancing a physically active lifestyle with a busy career enables him to understand and relate to the demands his patients face, whether recovering from sports injuries, managing repetitive strain injuries, or returning to peak performance.
