About

Dr Bobby Cheng obtained his medical degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1993. He subsequently specialised in Ophthalmology and was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal in the Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) in 2000. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd) and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS).

Dr Cheng went on to complete advanced fellowship training in two ophthalmic subspecialties: Vitreo-Retinal Medicine and Surgery, and Ocular Inflammation and Immunology. He was awarded the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) Overseas Scholarship in 2002 to pursue a fellowship in Ocular Inflammation and Immunology under Professor J.V. Forrester at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. Upon returning to Singapore, he completed an 18-month local fellowship in Vitreoretinal Medicine and Surgery at SNEC.

An active clinician, researcher, and educator, Dr Cheng has delivered over 50 presentations at international and regional conferences. His research interests include dengue maculopathy and Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging of the retina. He has published more than 15 papers in peer-reviewed journals such as Archives of Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, and Retina.

Dr Cheng’s contributions to research have earned him multiple accolades, including the Young Investigators’ Award (Clinical Category) at the 20th Singapore–Malaysia Joint Meeting in Ophthalmology and 4th Singapore National Eye Research Meeting (2002), Best Poster Award at the 6th International Symposium on Uveitis in Venezia-Mestre, Italy (2004), and another Best Poster Award at the 5th European Vitreo-Retinal Society Meeting in Örebro, Sweden (2005).

During his tenure at SNEC, Dr Cheng also served as an Adjunct Research Scientist with the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) and a Clinical Teacher with the National University of Singapore.
