About

Dr Darren Lee graduated MB, BCh, BAO, BA from the University of Dublin in 1999. On completing his housemanship and basic surgical training in the United Kingdom (UK), he gained the MRCSEd and MRCS (Glasgow) in 2002-2003. Returning to Singapore, he commenced the Advanced Specialty Training in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the National University Hospital, Singapore (NUH) and qualified FRCSEd (CTh) in 2012. Continuing at the Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the NUH, he was promoted to associate consultant (2015) and consultant surgeon (2017).

Dr Lee was the clinical lead surgeon and programme director for the Endoscopic Harvest of Long Saphenous Vein (EVH) programme, as part of the departmental approach to minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Dr Lee also expanded the programme to include Endoscopic Harvest of Radial Artery and Endoscopic Harvest of Sural Nerve. He established and developed the expanded clinical programme for EVH as a clinical service, including ongoing surveillance, training and standards.

In addition to services based within the NUH, Dr Lee also helped develop the extracorporeal (ECMO) life support programme at the department. This involved travelling to other hospitals, assessing and initiating ECMO treatment for patients, followed by safe retrieval to the Intensive Care Unit at NUH for ongoing treatment.

His other duties included a role as clinical tutor to undergraduate medical students at the National University of Singapore and as faculty and lecturer for the two-yearly Specialty Update Courses convened by the Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery.

At present, Dr Lee practices general adult cardiothoracic surgery, with special interests in minimally invasive cardiac surgery and in ECMO life support. He is currently in private practice, based at Mount Alvernia Hospital, Singapore.
