Dr Lau is a highly skilled orthopaedic surgeon with more than 13 years of experience in the practice of spine surgery. He is an expert in both the operative and non-operative care of spinal conditions that span wide spectrum of pathologies across all age groups. Whilst in public service, he routinely managed high volume of patients and performed hundreds of surgeries annually. He practises holistically, guided by evidence-based-medicine in a consultative approach with patients and their families to place them on the road of recovery. One of his proudest achievements is the decade-long scoliosis project to reduce surgical eligible rates in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis where he was a project director. He worked tirelessly with a team of experts and managed to achieve their goal via a multi-pronged approach including the use of smart braces. He modernizes the care of the spinal conditions in children by pioneering advanced techniques such as anterior-release followed by chair-based halo-gravity traction in the care of patients with the most severe scoliosis. He embraces technology such as vertebral-body tethering (VBT), robotic surgery, endoscopic deformity correction surgery and 3-D printing where suitable to optimize the care of his patients. In the course of his work, many of his patients benefitted from his personal touch. He felt honoured when he was invited to pen the foreword in a book entitled ‘Embrace’ – written by his patient – Liz who underwent scoliosis surgery. The book details her journey through scoliosis and aims to encourage other patients in a similar predicament. He is a recognized leader in the field of spine surgery and presents regularly at the national and international medical conferences. He regularly volunteered his expertise at the Cerebral Palsy Alliance of Singapore (CPAS).
