About
Dr Leong graduated from the National University of Singapore on an undergraduate scholarship awarded by the Public Service Commission. During undergraduate years, he was awarded various medals and book prizes for being the top student in Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology. He also received a medal for being the top student in the Final MBBS Examination.
After his internship, Dr Leong served as a medical officer in the Singapore Armed Forces and held the rank of Captain. He successfully completed the Primary Surgical Fellowship Examination of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and was presented the Howard-Eddey Medal for being the top candidate in Southeast Asia. He passed the Final Surgical Examination and was awarded the Surgical Fellowship in 1988. He completed his advanced training in 1990, having worked in surgical and ENT departments of several public hospitals. He was selected for the Ministry of Health Scholarship for Overseas Advanced Subspecialty training. During the years 1990/1991, he trained with Professor Michel Portmann in Bordeaux, France and Professor Ugo Fisch in Zurich, Switzerland. These are centers of international excellence for otology (middle ear surgery), neuro-otology(inner ear surgery) and microscopic skull base surgery.
On his return to Singapore, Dr Leong was appointed Senior Lecturer and Consultant in the University Department of Otolaryngology, National University Hospital. He has written numerous academic papers which were published in local and international medical journals. He has also given many talks, lectures and presented research findings at local and overseas conferences. He also wrote a chapter on ear surgery in a textbook titled Operative Otorhinolaryngology. However, his most gratifying achievement was in the teaching and training of younger doctors at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Dr Leong is also an active member of the Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Society of Singapore and was a member of the executive committee for several years. He was the founding Vice Chairman, executive committee of the Chapter of Otorhinolaryngology, College of Surgeons, Singapore. For many years he has been an active member of the Prospere Meniere’s Society, an international body devoted to the research and advancement in the treatment of ear diseases. He is married with two children.
