About
Dr Sriram Shankar graduated in 1981 from Stanley Medical College in Chennai India. After training in the same institution in basic surgery, he went to the United Kingdom (UK) for further training. He passed the FRCS examination held in London and was admitted to the English College. After some training in general surgery, he chose a career in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in August 1987. He completed 3 years training in the UK and moved to Singapore where at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), he trained in adult cardiothoracic, vascular surgery and in paediatric cardiac surgery. He then spent a year in UK as a fellow in cardiac surgery at the children’s hospital in Birmingham.
Dr Shankar returned to Singapore in June 1996 as consultant in the department of cardiothoracic surgery at SGH. He went on KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital before moving to Gleneagles Hospital in 2009. There, he developed a less invasive surgery for paediatric and adult cardiac patients. He was then appointed a visiting consultant in National University Hospital. On 1st April 2009, he established a comprehensive cardiothoracic service for children.
Since 2004, he and his team have been involved with developing cardiac surgery in Siem-Reap, Cambodia. Between 2004 and 2009, they trained the local surgeon, Dr Sar Vuthy to independently undertake closed cardiac procedures such as PDA ligation, pulmonary artery band etc.). Dr Shankar and his team also set up Open Heart Surgery in March 2009 and undertook simple cardiac surgery (ASD/VSD/TETRALOGY OF FALLOT/BLALOCK TAUSSIG SHUNT etc.). In 2015, they left a local team very capable of performing simple open and closed heart procedures. Dr Sriram Shankar and his team were also involved with training the Nhi Dong 1 Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam which was a busy hospital with a cardiac programme in its infancy. Their training have enabled the hospital team to undertake surgery for all complexities with a robust neonatal and infant surgical programme.
