About

Dr Thng Yongxian is a Fellowship-trained Hepatopancreatobiliary surgeon practising at Mount Alvernia Hospital. Prior to joining Nexus Surgical associates, Dr Thng was a consultant at the Department of General Surgery, Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) and the National University Health System, Singapore. He served as Clinical lead of the Hepatopancreatobiliary Division and pioneered the use of Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery for complex pancreatic and liver surgery in NTFGH. Under his leadership, Dr Thng and his team was able to perform minimally invasive surgery in up to 80% of the complex hepatopancreatobiliary cases.

Dr Thng received his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery form The National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Subsequently, he completed his basic and advanced surgical training at the National University hospital and was admitted to the Specialist Accreditation Board Singapore as a Specialised surgeon. Concomitantly, he was admitted as a Fellow to both the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (FRCS) and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS).
He pursued his subspecialty training in Hepatopancreatobiliary surgery first in the Department of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery, Singapore General Hospital, following which he pursued a clinical fellowship in minimally invasive Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery in Seoul National University Hospital, Bundang South Korea.

As an advocate for Value-driven care for patients, Dr Thng was a member of the Ministry of Health (MOH) Laparoscopic cholecystectomy Clinician workgroup for value-driven care (VDC). He also led the Diagnosis-related workgroup helping to increase hospital subventions by more than 5 million dollars in order to decrease cost to patients while providing quality healthcare.

On the research front, Dr Thng is widely recognised for his surgical technique and has been invited to present his surgical videos at numerous Best Video sessions during international surgical conferences. He has also published in international peer-reviewed journals on resection of complex liver malignancies. As a Senior Clinical lecturer of NUS School of Medicine, he has been an examiner at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and has helped developed and trained the next generation of surgeons.
